“A few years ago, Charlie Perkins sent me a pair of the Orvis Upland Hunting Softshell Pants to test without saying a word about them. I tossed the pants in my pile of gear and didn’t give them another thought. I was heading to Baja Mexico with a group of friends to hunt quail in some of the roughest, thorniest, cacti-filled country on the continent. The organizer of the trip sent out several emails leading up to our departure, and each one ended the same: “This is rough country, don’t forget your chaps.” Of course I forgot chaps. As we were meeting the guides the first morning of the hunt, everyone was cinching up their chaps with exaggerated zeal and hassling me about my wardrobe oversight. I decided my punishment would serve as a reminder to pack better in the future. It was well past noon and several hours into hunting hard in the rough country before I realized that I wasn’t bleeding profusely as expected. I hadn’t been stuck by thorns or cactus in any way. This is especially amazing because as a photographer, I spend an inordinate amount of time with the camera at my face, not looking where I am going. Also, I realized that I hadn’t thought about the pants at all. The tightly woven ripstop front panel completely protects the leg from the upper thigh down to the entire cuff of the pant. On the inside of the cuff is an integrated gaiter with boot lace clip that is handy in tick country, but also keeps sharp seeds and burrs from getting into your socks. The fabric has a water-resistant finish and stretches 360 degrees which makes for the most comfortable, durable and functional hunting pant that I have ever worn. I have hunted/photographed with them for multiple years from Baja to Montana and all points in between in snow, sun, rain, and hail and they still look about the same as the day they arrived in the mail.”
